Written In Dust

When Creative Arts East commissioned me to photograph a silent Chinese film with musical accompaniment, I didn’t know what to expect – who knew such a project existed?!

I turned up at St Mary’s Church, Banham on a cold wintry evening for the performance of Written In Dust, by British Director, Gareth Rees.  Set in Beijing, it is a contemporary tragic tale of three friends who migrate to the city in search of a new life, but encounter love, lies and betrayal.  With a dark and gritty style of cinematography and the haunting musical accompaniment by Ling Peng and Andrew Middleton, the experience was captivating.  The atmospheric glow inside the church enhanced the performance; rural cinema proved to be an unexpected treat.
