Anyone who follows my work will know how much I love to photograph ice hockey; a real photographic challenge filled with high speed action!  It’s always a real treat to photograph an outdoor pond hockey tournament – different rules to a usual ice hockey game and always the hope that the sun may shine and there will be a bright blue sky!  Organized by Hockey Tutorial, Great Yarmouth’s Christmas ice rink was the venue for the 2017 UK Winter Classic.

Eight teams from across the UK travelled to the seaside town to take part in the UK’s only outdoor ice hockey tournament. With weather warnings for significant snowfall in the area, the stage was set for a winter wonderland.  However, Norfolk had different plans and whilst the rest of the country was covered in a thick blanket of snow, it rained and rained and then rained some more.  The weather failed to dampen the spirits of the hockey players and it was a great tournament.  The Royal Navy Kings, who had travelled all the way from Plymouth, took the trophy for a second consecutive year beating the Grimsby Ice Bears in the final – congratulations guys!
